Filipino Dating Culture: Ligaw, First Date Rules and Why Her Cousin Comes Along

The short answer

Filipino dating is slower and more public than you are used to. We call courtship ligaw. On early dates the man pays, often for the cousin or sister she brings too. Arrive early, meet somewhere bright and public, be kind to the staff and see her safely home. Text her that night, then keep a steady daily rhythm and let her set the pace.

What is ligaw, the Filipino way of courtship?

Ligaw is our word for courtship. It means a man shows his intentions openly, visits her and her family, and proves over time that he is sincere. She only becomes his girlfriend when she gives her answer. Until then he is courting her, and everyone around her knows it.

Back home you might meet, go out a few times and slowly become a couple without anyone saying so. The traditional Filipino way has a clear courting stage first. In the old days a suitor came to the house, sat with her parents and came back the next week. Some young men even sang under her window at night. We call that harana, and it is rare now, which is why it still makes women smile.

Modern Filipinas in the city may date more the way you are used to. Her parents and her lola (grandmother) usually still think the old way. And almost every Filipina I know loves to be courted. That is different from being chased.

Ligaw tells her family four things about you:

For a man of 60, this is good news. Steady and patient is exactly what older men do well. The young men she knows often lose interest after two weeks. A man who is still there in month three stands out.

Why does she bring a cousin or friend on the first date?

She brings a sister, cousin or friend for safety, for comfort and to protect her name. She is meeting a man she only knows from a screen, and her family wants a report from someone they trust. It is how good families raise their daughters. It says nothing bad about you.

An American woman might text a friend her location before a first date. Many Filipinas bring the friend along instead. It might be her younger sister or a cousin. It might be her best friend, or even her mother. Some women bring someone only on the first date. Others keep doing it until you have met the family.

There are four reasons, and none of them is about you:

The men who do well treat the chaperone like a welcome guest. They stand up, learn her name and ask about her school or work. The men who do badly turn their chair toward the woman they like and forget the cousin is there. The cousin never forgets.

A friend of mine once brought her nephew, who was eleven. Her date asked the boy about basketball for ten minutes and ordered him a big dessert. That boy went home and told the whole family that the American was "cool." It was the best review the man could have asked for. When you book, ask for a table for four. If she comes alone, nothing is lost.

Who pays on a date in the Philippines?

On early dates the man pays, and that usually includes the cousin or friend she brought. Filipino men do the same. Paying is part of ligaw, and it shows you are serious and able to take care of people. If you invited her, you are the host, and the host feeds the guests.

Among friends we split the bill all the time. We call it KKB, short for kanya-kanyang bayad, which means each pays their own. That is fine for a group outing. On a first date it feels cold. If you take out your phone calculator and divide by three, the sister will say one sentence on the ride home. It will not be a kind one.

Many Filipinas will reach for their purse anyway. Often it is her way of showing she is not with you for your money. Most of the time she does not expect you to accept. A warm "Today is my treat, you can choose the dessert place next time" works well. It gives her a way to give back later.

There is one time to let her pay. When a Filipina has a birthday, a promotion or a first paycheck, she often treats everyone. We call it a blowout. Refusing it is like refusing a gift.

Paying for dates is courtship. Being asked to send money before you have met is something else. The FBI's advice on romance scams is plain: never send money to someone you have only talked to online or by phone. A sincere woman will understand that rule. My guide to romance scam warning signs covers the rest.

What are the first date rules a Filipina expects?

She expects you to arrive early, pick a bright public place near her, dress neatly and be kind to everyone around you. She also expects you to see her safely home and message her that night. None of this costs much. A careful man on a pension can do all of it.

A first date with a foreign man is an event for her. She told her mother. A friend helped her choose the dress. Her aunt already has an opinion about you. So she is watching to see if you take it as seriously as she does.

  1. Be early. We joke about "Filipino time" among ourselves. When a foreign man is late, she does not think he is adjusting. She thinks he does not value her. Arrive first and send "I'm here, no rush, take your time."
  2. Choose a safe, easy place. A mall coffee shop on a Saturday afternoon is perfect. So is a clean family restaurant. Your hotel or condo will worry her, even if your heart is pure.
  3. Give her two choices. Ask where she wants to go and she will say "kahit saan," anywhere is fine. Offer two places near her instead and let her pick.
  4. Dress like it matters. Wear a clean collared shirt, long pants and decent shoes. Tank tops and rubber slippers tell her you did not try.
  5. Watch how you treat staff. Call the waiter "kuya" (big brother) and the waitress "ate" (big sister). If you are rude to the guard, she pictures you being rude to her mother.
  6. End it well. Book her ride home, pay for it and wait until the car leaves. Then send "Did you get home safe?" within the hour.

Keep it to about two hours. End while you are both still enjoying it. For the fuller list of what goes wrong, see the things foreigners do that Filipinas hate.

How do you read a shy Filipina on a first date?

Quiet does not mean uninterested. Many Filipinas feel hiya on a first date, a mix of shyness and modesty. She may avoid eye contact, eat very little and answer in short words. Some also play pakipot, a little hard to get, to see if you are patient.

Foreign men often read these signals the wrong way. Here are the common ones.

What she doesWhat you may thinkWhat it often means
Orders only a drinkShe is not hungryShe is too shy to eat a big meal in front of you
Goes quietThe date is going badlyShe is nervous and hoping you stay kind
Checks her phone onceShe is boredShe is telling her cousin she arrived safely
Says "ikaw bahala"She does not care"It's up to you." She wants to see what you choose
Laughs at your accentYou embarrassed yourselfShe finds it sweet that you tried

If she eats very little, order two or three dishes to share and say you ordered too much. Now she is helping you, and she will eat.

Pakipot is her quiet way of saying "I am not easy, show me you can wait." My cousin went on three dates with a widower before she let him hold her hand. He told her later he almost gave up because she seemed cold. She laughed. She had told her whole family about him the same night. Shy is not the same as uninterested, so give it three dates before you decide anything.

How often should you text a Filipina after a date?

Text her the same evening, then keep a steady daily rhythm. A good morning, a short check-in during the day and a good night is about right in the early weeks. Waiting three days to "play it cool" makes her think there is another woman.

Much of the old ligaw now happens on Messenger, Viber and WhatsApp. A man used to visit the house every week. Today a steady message says the same thing. It says "I'm still here, and I'm serious." When you go quiet, she wonders.

The opposite mistake is the flood. Twenty messages while she is at work, then "Hello?" and "Did I do something wrong?" will scare her. Her friends will call you clingy. Send one message and wait.

Sundays are for mass and family lunch. A message like "Enjoy your family day, tell me later what you ate" makes you part of her Sunday without asking for her time. Expect your messages to be shared with her friends. Write each one as if three of them will read it.

How slow is the pace, and what about touch in public?

It is slower than you are used to. Holding hands usually comes after a few dates, when she reaches for yours. Kissing belongs in private, and some married couples never kiss in public at all. Let her set the pace on anything physical. You never lose a good Filipina by being a gentleman.

Faith is part of this. The Philippine Statistics Authority's 2020 census counted 78.8 percent of the household population as Roman Catholic. Hiya and neighborhood gossip are part of it too. A foreign man kissing a Filipina at the mall makes people whisper unkind things about her.

On an early dateHow it lands
Handshake or a friendly waveAlways fine
Offering your arm on stairs or at a crossingSweet
Holding handsUsually too soon on date one
A goodbye hugLet her start it
A kissNot on a first date
"One drink" at your hotelNever, she may say yes and feel pressured

If she holds your hand and then lets go near her church or her street, let go without a word. She is protecting her name, and you are helping. City women can be more relaxed. The safe default is still the slow one.

The same goes for big topics. Marriage, moving to America and money can wait. Raised on a first date, they sound like a plan you made before you met her.

How do you show respect for her family early on?

You show respect by treating her family as part of the courtship from the start. Be kind to whoever she brings along, greet her parents with po and opo, and never arrive at her home empty-handed. In the Philippines you are never really dating just one person.

Po and opo are small words of respect we use with older people. "Salamat po" means thank you, said politely. When you meet her parents, you may see younger relatives do the mano po. They take the elder's hand and touch the back of it to their forehead. A foreign man who does it gently, without being told, is talked about for a week.

Bring a small pasalubong, a gift for the house. A box of pastries or a bag of mangoes is perfect. Expensive jewelry or a new phone during the courting months looks like you are trying to buy the answer.

Visit her at home, not only at the mall. A man who sits and talks with her father is a real suitor in her parents' eyes. Bring her home at a decent hour and say good night to her parents before you leave. Fathers notice that every single time.

When the cousin finally stops coming along, it means the family has decided you are safe. The watching does not stop, though. "Did he open the door? Did he pay? Did he get you a ride home?" Keep your first date manners for good. My guide to meeting her Filipino family covers the first visit home.

Questions men ask me

Is it normal for a Filipina to bring her family on a first date?

Yes, very normal. A sister, cousin, friend or even her mother may come along on the first few dates. It is about safety and her reputation, not about you. Greet the chaperone warmly, include her in the talk and pay for her meal too. A good report from her helps you more than anything you say.

How long does Filipino courtship take before she says yes?

There is no fixed time. With traditional families it can take weeks or a few months of steady visits, messages and small efforts before she agrees to be your girlfriend. City women may move a little faster. A man who stays patient and keeps showing up usually does far better than one who pushes for an answer.

Should I bring flowers or a gift on a first date with a Filipina?

Keep it small or skip it. A big bouquet in a public place can make a shy woman feel watched. A small treat for her family later, like pastries or fruit, means more. Expensive gifts during courtship can look like you are trying to buy her answer, and her family may feel the same.

Is it okay to invite a Filipina to my hotel or condo?

Not in the early dates. Even with good intentions, it worries her and her family, and she may say yes only because she feels pressured. Meet in malls, cafes, family restaurants and other public places. Once her family knows you, home visits happen at her house first, usually with relatives around.

What does it mean when a Filipina says ikaw bahala?

Ikaw bahala means it is up to you. On a date it usually means she is shy about choosing and wants to see what you pick. It is not a sign she does not care. Give her two simple options instead, like this cafe or that restaurant, so she can choose without feeling awkward.
